Beware of what species you put in your aquarium! Things could go wrong...

This started out as a practise in waterbubbles and then evolved. Personal references used for the face and for parts of fish (end result is kind of a mixture between a swedish flunder and a tropical fish).

Background story:
Thora Borgarhjort(Þóra Town-Hart or Þóra borgarhjörtr)receives an adorable baby lindworm as a gift from her father Herrauðr, the Earl of Götaland (in Sweden).
Alas the lindworm grows and takes Thora hostage, demanding to be supplied with one ox a day (or more).Thora is eventually freed by a young man in fur-trousers named Ragnar, who then obtains the name of Lodbrok ("hairy britches") and becomes Thora's husband.
What happened to the Lindworm? It was of course killed by Ragnar.who became a great hero. He appears in many legends and folklore tails and it is beleived his story is based off viking sagas.

The lindworm was like a giant snake, sometimes it had frontlegs and sometimes also wings (although that was not so common in scandinavian lindworms, more so in England, then they were called wyverns and France, vouivres).One can for example see lindworms in viking runestones.
There are two forms of lindworms, one is like an enchanted prince in disguise, and gave fortune if you met one. The other was very dangerous, like an evil dragon, it moved by biting it's tail and rolled like a wheel.

Technical stuff: PhotoshopCS2 about 40 hours. No special reference used, except for looking at my hand holding my daughters plushie in front of the mirror. For the scales I found a texture that I used at CG textures http://cgtextures.com/

The huntress was from the beginning meant to be a tuff, fears amazon/viking like female, but as I painted she just refused to look mean and didn’t fit in the background, a forest. I saw a documentary about Tolkien and was influenced by the land and people of Rohirrin, so I changed the background. I also thought she needed some companions on her hunting, so she got a bird and a dog. Her hairdo was inspired from George Lucas Star Wars movies, no special character, just some hairdo that would fit on a female in one of the bar scenes. Huldra appears in old Scandinavian folklore as a seductive forest creature, the Lady and ruler of the forest.
The huldra is stunningly beatiful, but if you saw her from behind you could see she is hollow with a hole in her back, just like an old tree.
She also has an animal's tail, in Norway it's a cow's tail, but in Sweden(where I live) it is usually a fox's tail.
Huldra is very interested in humans, especially men, and rewards those that are kind to her, but she can make your life miserable if you make her angry.
In some traditions, she lures men into the forest to make romance (sex), again rewarding those that gives her satisfaction and often killing those who don't or refuse her.
Sometimes she marries a local farm boy.When they are married in church, the tail falls off. If the man doesn't treat her right, she will be incredibly ugly and the husband will suffer greatly throughout the marriage.

I had a small photo of me and my brother when he was a baby, it was a very peaceful photo that I’ve thought about a lot. So, I started to sketch with this photo in mind. As it took form it changed to a sort of mother/child/vampire painting. I was very much inspired by Giotto di Bondones’ Madonna paintings. I also wrote a sort of poem:

Thousand of years,we have lived side by side,
in the land between day & night.
Yet, you have never understood
In shadowland,you scream, you run,pray for the sun to return

Always the fear in your eyes,you say we are heartless.
Evil.You have never understood

There is no choice,It is survival.
In the thick grey darkness,open your eyes and see.
There they are, the little ones

Not evil.Only love
